The Best Android Tablet
Wow, I’ve waited a long time for this. The best Android tablet, my review on Acer Iconia Tab A500. It’s been close to a year, give or take a month or two, since I’ve been looking for and comparing the best Android tablet and the Acer Iconia Tab A500 won the challenge.
Now I’m talking from the average consumer’s point of view. I looked at what all of what the best Android tablets had to offer as well as the non-Android tablets. For the sake of clarity I considered iOS (Apple), WebOS (HP), BB Tablet OS (BlackBerry) as well as, of course, Android 3 (by many manufacturers).
WebOS From HP – BlackBerry Tablet OS
First of all let me eliminate a couple and tell you why I did so. I considered WebOS only when HP had the crazy $100 price tag for 24 hours. Of course I didn’t get my hands on it because I was skeptical and slow to act, as well as unfamiliar with WebOS, but for $100 the hardware alone would have been worth it. Alas I’ll never know for sure. Compared to the ever growing popularity of the Android Tablet, WebOS didn’t make my list of must consider.
I read that the BlackBerry Tablet OS was too restrictive and for the average consumer, might not do all that they may want from it. That put me off the BlackBerry Tablet OS, however, I did keep it in mind because of the BlackBerry name and confidence that you get when you consider their hardware. So I still had my eyes set for the best Android tablet that I could find.
iOS From Apple
I have an Apple iPhone 3 whose contract is coming to an end in the next several months (at time of writing) and my cell phone provider always fights with me for the best plan I can get. So now I have even more reason to set my eyes on the best Android tablet to go with the variety of Android phones out there both expensive as well as inexpensive. But that’s another My Review On … to come when I do make a new contract with a cell phone provider. This is a warning to you “big telecom” companies in Canada. You may have us by the short and curlies on the price but you don’t have to have us all the time. We can switch to another cell phone provider for a while and let them extort us instead.
Back to iOS from Apple; it’s just plain expensive. A friend of mine loves Apple but not because he owns their products, (by the way, he does own some of their products) but he loves Apple because he owns some shares and he loves it because there are plenty of fools out there who are willing to pay Apple’s prices. His paraphrased words, not mine, so all you Apple fans, please don’t shoot the messenger. My iPhone has given me a few problems. It has failed hardware-wise, so I had to get it replaced. And it has failed software-wise, so I had to go on another phone to customer support to get it working again. The bottom line is, if you consider hardware and software being at the very least equal, then the price comes into play so I’m sorry to all you Apple fans who are willing to pay bloated prices for the product. It may work great and look great but you can say the same thing about other products.
Acer Iconia Tab A500
Now to what you came here for… My Review On Acer Iconia Tab A500. The Acer Iconia Tab A500 has 2 USB ports while some of the others don’t even have one. Why do I need a USB port? If you are travelling and you don’t have the 3G version, which adds to the cost, you can use the USB Wireless Internet Stick to access the internet. If you want to upload or download pictures or videos for your friends and family to see but there is no WiFi available, then USB is the answer, asnwell as one of the best inventions for connectivity yet, in my opinion. Just consider the name… Universal Serial Bus.
Battery Life and Android Market
The Acer Iconia Tab A500 has a long batter charge. It can go for approximately 7 to 8 hours of use and much longer while idle or in sleep mode. And this Android Tablet does not have it’s market place locked to a third party app market. One of the main thing I looked for in my review on Acer Iconia Tab A500 was that it had access to the Best Android Tablet app market, that being the real Android Market.
The Acer Iconia Tab A500 also has front and rear camera and supports video calling (WiFi) as well as video recording. First thing I did, after going through the setup (do not skip any of the setup steps), was take a video of my son talking away as if to an imaginary friend. By the way, Skype works on this tablet. Skype was one of the next things I tested by video calling my wife on her computer. The video was a little choppy by that may have been due to the low lighting.
The Acer Iconia Tab A500 also has, among other things, a built-in GPS, WiFI b/g/n, Bluetooth, HDMI output, and DLNA certified. This Android Tablet also has G-Sensor; E-Compass; Light Sensor; Gyroscope and best of all 10.1″ multi-touch screen display. I don’t think that I missed anything that I was looking for in my search for the best Android Tablet.
Best Android Tablet Price
The Acer Iconia Tab A500 also came on sale at FutureShop. The 64GB version sold online for $399. I just had to have it. At the same time you could have pick up the Acer Iconia Tab A500 32GB version for the same price which would have probably been my recourse if I missed out on this deal.
The Bottom Line
For me, it is always the bottom line. Get the most for the least. Apple capitalizes on those who are “fans” of Apple. Samsung is in direct competition with Apple, hence the similarity in price, although I have to point out that Apple lowered their price on their lowest model to compete with Samsung. I would have preferred Samsung, but I couldn’t justify the bottom line.
Acer Iconia Tab A500 Best Android Tablet for the Money
In my opinion the Acer Iconia Tab A500 is the best Android Tablet for your money, when you can get it while on sale, and there will always be sales. My Review On Acer Iconia Tab A500 as the Best Android Tablet is a two thumbs up (I used both hands on this review.)
